  • What is functional medicine, and what is Integrative Medicine?
What is functional medicine? Source: ifm.org Functional medicine takes a comprehensive approach to prevention, health, and well-being. It treats root causes of disease and restores healthy function through a personalized patient experience — all while being a vital partner to conventional medicine. Integrative medicine the care approach that takes wisdom, research, and clinical expertise from many different schools of thought on health care: conventional, functional, naturopathic, alternative, spiritual/energetic and more. When you work with an integrative medicine practitioner, you can expect to feel seen and heard. Integrative medicine takes the essential approach from functional medicine that involves understanding who you are as an individual, your detailed personal and family history, the circumstances around your first symptoms, and the experiences you may have had with other healthcare providers. Here’s more about what patients can expect from their integrative medicine visit at Skylight Wellness South: A comprehensive approach to health and well-being From chronic illness to disease prevention, integrative medicine systematically addresses the unique physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of all patients. Practitioners bring together a wide complement of modern scientific tools, including a deep understanding of biology, physiology, the physics of sunlight, genetics, environmental and social health, and the essential connection between mental and physical well-being. By understanding each patient’s genetic, environmental, and lifestyle circumstances and history, integrative medicine delivers transformative care to get lasting health and health restoration where it has been lost. A collaborative practitioner-patient relationship Integrative medicine fosters a collaborative practitioner-client relationship that empowers patients to take control of their health. It is this combination of focusing on individual patients and applying a comprehensive treatment path that delivers transformational results.
  • Can Skylight Wellness South be my primary care provider?
No, we are not primary care providers. We are part of care team and encourage our patients to have a primary care provider in place.
  • What is the difference between standard and integrative / functional medicine?
Standard, or traditional medicine, has an emphasis on lab work, and pharmaceutical medications, and provides some useful scientific tools for achieving wellness. Integrative medicine is an approach to healing and healthcare that encompasses different schools of thought for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing. It is particularly focused on using cutting edge and evidence from research and literature to empower clients to health renewal. Much of the best wisdom relates to lifestyle, the cornerstone of lasting change in the integrative model. Skylight Wellness focuses on finding the underlying causes of your symptoms, such as inflammation or gut dysbiosis, that can cause problems all over the body. When these things are corrected, many problems resolve downstream. Encompassing alternative medicine's cutting edge wisdom, such as paying attention to our body's circadian rhythm and understanding the biophysics of sunlight exposure and grounding are also important elements in our quest to help you navigate the problems of modern chronic illness and chronic symptoms.
  • Does Skylight Wellness South take insurance? Can I use my HSA or FSA account?
We do not accept insurance. Most insurance companies have gatekeeper models, which work poorly at best with integrative medicine testing and protocols for getting to the causes and solutions to many modern, chronic symptoms. To help our clients, we are working on adding preferred third-party vendors, PayPal Credit or Care Credit, which will allow you to make payments directly with them. Please let us know if you would like to use one of these options for payment plans. You may also be able to pay for our services with your HSA or FSA account. Please check with your insurance provider for more information on what are eligible covered medical expenses. For lab work, check with your insurance company to see if the tests Skylight Wellness South orders for you are covered under your health insurance policy. If they are a covered expense, let us know what type of documentation your insurance company requires for you to submit to them.
  • Is Skylight Wellness South all telehealth?
At this time, all appointments with our team are via telehealth on our confidential HIPAA-compliant platform, which can be found on your client portal. However, if you are local to the Nashville area, meeting in person may be an option with our health coach and addiction counselor.
  • What services do you offer?
We offer comprehensive integrative clinical care and functional health coaching through our premiere monthly Membership, offered in two tracks, one for chronic physical and/or mood symptoms, and another for addiction recovery, as well as Fee for Service Care for those who prefer not to sign up to be a Member. Memberships do not have time limits, unlike many current functional or integrative care programs. Please visit our Services page for the information on all that we offer.
  • Are labs included in your pricing? How do labs work?
Lab work is a separate cost from the services we offer, since everyone's needs are different and would be impossible to include in our pricing. We carefully consider that lab work that we request for you, and we do not mark up the cost of any labs we order. Labcorp and Quest: Standard Lab Testing We will order the labs for you online, and you make an appointment or walk in to their local lab location to have your labs drawn. Rupa Health, Designs for Health, Evexia, Fullscript, and others: Integrative Lab Testing For lab work not commonly offered by Labcorp or Quest, we will order the labs for you online from Rupa Health, Designs for Heath, Evexia, FullScript or others, who will then contact you directly, request payment from you upfront, and send everything to you that you need, along with detailed instructions, to process your labs. We are always looking for the best way to get your lab work done, at the lowest cost with the best convenience. Results in all cases will be sent back to us, and we will discuss your results at your next appointment.
